Selena Gomez’s Rare Impact Fund And The Ethos of Giving Back

Selena Gomez — musician, actor, beauty brand owner, and someone making a difference.

As the creator of Rare Beauty, Selena has firmly made her mark in the beauty and skincare landscape in the past few years. The thing is, she didn’t stop there.

Selena isn’t just the brains behind a beauty brand and yet another celebrity that’s endorsing products among her fans. No. She also used this opportunity to kick start the ‘Rare Impact Fund’ — an inspiring project where she raises money to support mental health services among young people and in schools.

Dear readers, this is the type of celebrity story that we love to cover. Selena is using her influence as a force of good and helping to transform the mental health narrative through her fundraising. And, Rare Beauty is also massively successful as a result. So let’s deep dive into Selena’s story and why we need more celebrities just like her.

Selena’s ascent to beauty industry stardom

Having worked on developing her beauty line for over two years, Selena Gomez’s beauty brand came to fruition in 2020. In the space of three years, reports suggest that the brand has accumulated more than 1B in sales, and sold $70 million worth of blush alone. So what’s the secret to her success?

With inclusive shades and a focus on natural, no-makeup aesthetics, that brand firmly hits the spot for many shoppers looking for a range of products that suit their needs. What’s more, the products are touted as being vegan, kind to the planet, and cruelty-free, ticking all the boxes among the beauty lovers of the future.

Not only that, Rare champions a form of beauty that embraces being comfortable in your skin. Now that’s something we’re really about at TIB.

According to a statement released at the time, Gomez said: “Being rare is about being comfortable with yourself.” She added: “I’ve stopped trying to be perfect. I just want to be me. I think Rare Beauty can be more than a beauty brand. I want us all to stop comparing ourselves to each other and start embracing our uniqueness. You’re not defined by a photo, a like, or a comment. Rare Beauty isn’t about how other people see you. It’s about how you see yourself.”

Since 2020, the sky has been the limit. The brand has been applauded and embraced by beauty lovers, and Gomez’s position as an influential beauty founder has continued on an upward trajectory.

An advocate for mental health

In a testament to her support of mental health services, Selena was able to use her brand’s instant success to do some good. Taking things one step further, Selena launched the Rare Impact Fund shortly after kickstarting her beauty brand.

Inspired by her mental health challenges, Selena wanted to give back in ways that made a difference. The goal of the Rare Impact Funds was to raise $100 million over the next 10 years to support mental health initiatives for young people. That money is then used to support several life-changing organizations around the world that are helping young people navigate mental health and unlock accessibility to mental health resources. And, it’s making a difference already.

Speaking about how such resources were vital to her mental health journey, Selena expressed her commitment to backing such key resources for others. "Having access to tools and resources that helped me understand my mental health has had an incredible impact on my life and it is my life's mission to reach young people who need support. I am very grateful to these organizations for the work they do," she said.

Around 1% of Rare Beauty's revenue is put toward her mental health mission. Even with just that, the Rare Impact Fund can work with a wide network of mental health advocates around the world and facilitate meaningful conversations and support. What’s incredible is that the fund has so far distributed $3M in grant support to organizations supporting mental health.

Continuing the conversation

Earlier this month, Gomez turned 31 and shared a powerful message with her fans. Instead of birthday wishes and gifts, she asked her friends and fans for something even more important.

“People keep asking me what I want for my birthday, and I tell everyone the same thing please do not get me anything but if you want to do something for my birthday, please donate to the Rare Impact Fund,” Selena wrote on social media. “If you have the means, consider donating to help us make a difference.”

Selena Gomez's journey in the beauty industry has been nothing short of extraordinary. She’s not only revolutionized the beauty landscape with inclusive and planet-friendly products but also leveraged her brand's success to champion a cause close to her heart. That’s why we’re celebrating Selena today. While most celebrities may endorse products for financial gain, Selena saw her brand as an opportunity to make a difference. We wish more famous faces shared her commitment to a bigger cause.

Launching the Rare Impact Fund not only sets an example for other celebs but also sheds light on the pressing issue of mental health, particularly among young people. This reflects the wider ethos behind her fund, which is about embracing uniqueness and using our influence to uplift others.

the bottom line

So remember, when you’re thinking about buying your next beauty product, ask yourself whether your purchase is also going toward a good cause.
